ASTM A179 Seamless Tubes
ASTM A179 seamless steel tubes are used in a wide variety of applications including steam generators, gas turbines and sugar cane processing plants. Since seamless steel pipe is designed for cryogenic applications, it has good thermal conductivity and is ideal for use in heat exchangers and condensers. ASTM A179 is a standard specification for seamless, cold-drawn mild steel tubes for tubular heat exchangers, condensers, and similar heat transfer equipment. It covers tubes with outside diameters from 1/8 to 3 inches [3.2 to 76.2 mm], inclusive. Tube sizes and thicknesses normally supplied to this specification are 1/2 in. to 3 in. [12.7 to 76.2 mm] outside diameter and 0.035 to 0.134 in. [0.9 to 3.4 mm] wall thickness. ASTM A179 tubing is available in a variety of grades and sizes, including: A179/SA179; A179A/SA179A; A179B/SA179B; A179C/SA179C; A179D/SA179D; and others.
